Thanks for your pointer to Mac's email (0404.html).

I overlooked Mac's explicit mention of variable initializations in the port list.

Actually, Mac expressed the preference that variable initializations NOT be in the port list.

We all agree that the final syntax does allow such references,
but I am not sure that was the intention of the committee, or whether perhaps it was overlooked
amongst all the syntax revisions.

I guess the question is moot now.
